Access to the course is by referral only from musculoskeletal services, ICATS, community pain management teams, pain clinics and IAPT services. The course works in conjunction with a patient's already existing pain service, as well as on its own, depending on the healthcare referral setting. Anchoring the digital course within a specific clinical unit allows the course to be integrated into the other modalities of the pain treatment package.
As the course guides participants through all the elements of the intensive Pain Management Programme (PMP) as defined by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE), it can be offered to patients where a real world PMP is considered an appropriate intervention. This is particularly useful where access to real world PMPs are limited or where patients are restricted due to mobility, environment or time constraints, making it difficult to attend real world courses or appointments. Evaluated for its effectiveness and backed up by research, with Pathway through Pain you can confidently provide a high quality and effective intervention for persistent musculoskeletal pain, at low cost and with minimum disruption to the work of your pain teams.
A place on Pathway through Pain provides a patient with:
- An engaging course to follow on their phone, tablet or computer.
- 24 online training sessions led on video by a team of experts.
- Assignments to practise in daily life, with supporting emails.
- Guided meditation and relaxation audio programmes.
- Tools for self-assessment of pain and condition.
- A library of the key elements of the course to keep for life.
- Telephone helpline support (non-clinical).
Self-assessment tools are embedded throughout the course to give an in-depth view of patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes through questionnaires at the start of the course, the end, and one month after completion. 71% of patients who take the course say they find it helpful. See the results for our course completers and research evidence here.
Using our course management system, the clinical team can control who is given a place on the course and when, keep a track of participant progress, receive weekly participant activity reports, and report outcomes of course completers for, Health State (EQ-VAS), Depression (PHQ-9), and Anxiety (GAD-7), Disability (ODI) and Pain Self Efficacy (PSEQ). With the course management system, a full data record can be easily produced for automatic or manual addition onto patient record systems.
Pathway through Pain is run by Wellmind Media, a producer of digital courses for mental wellbeing established in 2002. Our mission is to work with expert providers to run engaging, informative and enjoyable mental wellbeing courses that help and empower participants.
Results & Evidence
Pathway through Pain is reducing healthcare costs for a leading NHS pain service and improving patient outcomes.
"Pathway through Pain is now integral to our service. It improves the quality of life of the patients we serve - and its improved my quality of life no end; I don’t tell patient after patient the same thing time and again in my clinic - the programme does it for me!"
Dr. Alf Collins, Consultant in Pain Medicine, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.
